Stumbling around the internet the other day I landed on something that I thought rather good. It was a Hub page all about RC Helicopters. Now I’ve flown a couple of Helicopters in my time and boy do I wish I had this information when I first started. You know it’s not easy to pick up the controls of one of these beasts.

My first flight was with an electric powered, Collective Pitch model and it only lasted for a few minutes before I lost control. It’s a good job that I hadn’t gone too high otherwise I would have ruined what is a $300 copter. And that is something that this hub page makes clear. It tells you everything you need to know about getting in to the hobby from the basics so you won’t look blankly at the people from your local model shop when they ask you ‘Kit or ARTF’.

I highly recommend taking a look at this page, the information on here is very valuable if you are just starting out or know someone who is interested.

    Visit it at http://hubpages.com/hub/RC-Heli

I have been an RC Powered nut for as long as I can remember. Ok, I can only remember a few hours back but I reckon that I have been in to the hobby for the best part of 18 years. Some people just like one type of RC powered vehicle but for me the joy is in being able to pilot my own boat, race around the track like a real racing driver or soar to new heights behind the controls of my very own plane.

Let’s face it, to do all of those things in real life you would need to spend a fortune, but for those of us who don’t have a fortune to spend there are RC powered vehicles that can bring us the enjoyment of building, driving and taking care of our very own fleet.

I started out, like many others, with a radio controlled car which I got for my 10th birthday. I think at the time it was the must have toy but where as most of my friends shelved there toys after a few weeks (and a few disastrous races) I wanted more. It wasn’t long before I was looking longingly at the next model up and that started me on the slippery slope to becoming a true enthusiast.

From there I have gone on to purchase RC powered cars, helicopters, planes and boats, each one bringing me different experiences. As I grew older I discovered the joys of building my own vehicles and became a real airplane nut. I now have 12 planes (it’s an expensive hobby) my pride and joy being a scale model of the best WWI plane ever, the Sopwith Camel - the plane that Biggles fly’s.

Building the aircraft has given me a new love of my vehicles and it is something that I would recommend to everyone. It’s not always easy to find information about airplane construction and the best thing I ever did was purchase a copy of Airplane Workshop secrets. It really is the best RC powered plane building guide you could get.

And so I come to my blog. Taking my hobby in to the 21st century. Originally I wanted to have somewhere to post news about the RC powered community but I may very well post some other material when it comes to mind. I hope you enjoy what you read here and find at least some of it useful.

Stumbling through the internet this morning, as I so often do, I came across this interesting blog post by Tara Soonthornnont about how to choose the right RC powered helicopter for you. It’s something that I have often thought about writing about myself, especially now that there are many more choices.
I remember the old days of the nitro powered helicopters. They were expensive, they were difficult to fly and above all, they were BIG and took a lot of time and care to keep going. Now, I have a mini chopper sat on my desk. It’s only a tiny thing but I can fly it around my office whenever I am board. You know what, it handles really well. Of course, getting the right type of RC powered helicopter is so much more important now than it was.
As I got more in to War birds I found that I used my helicopter less and less. Had I known now that I would only use the chopper for a few hours a day I probably would have gone with a co-axial model, as suggested in the article.
Tara’s article is really worth a look actually. If you are about to start off down the RC powered helicopter route then it really sets out the ground rules for you.

It’s very big on the political agenda at the moment and looks like it will remain so for some time to come. Renewable energies are everywhere. In the UK there has been a big debate over wind or nuclear power and more houses seam to be getting converted to accept solar energy.

So, what can lovers of RC, powered vehicles to to capitalise on this? I’m sure those of you who use nitro gas will be noticing the price increase and scarcity of it at the moment. Well one guy seams to have the right idea and is running an RC hummer (from radio shack) on solar energy. OK, it’s not quite the same as zooming around with an RC powered by gas but for those of us with electric engines it’s not a bad idea.

Using only a solar powered torch, he is charging up his car the greenest way possible. Another, similar, post on the site uses two solar panels which each put out around 12 volts. The poster says that can run the car independently of the batteries, although going in to the shade makes the car stop. Still it is an interesting experiment which may have far reaching benefits in the long run. Anyone out there thinking of giving it a go, I wish you all the success making a green RC powered by the sun.

In his free time, the grandson of the late Vice President of the Philippines can be found at a dirt landing strip whilst planes take off and land around him.

This isn’t some international smuggling ring however. According to an article in The News Today Judgee Lopez-Pena (the aforementioned president’s grandson) is a big fan of RC Powered aircraft. He owns 46 airplanes, 26 helicopters, 12 race cars and two air boats and is considered as one of Western Visayas’ biggest RC Powered models collectors.

Judgee is semi-retired now and gets to fly his RC powered planes almost every day. “I am proud of my toys.” He says, and even keeps two maintenance men around in case there are any electrical problems. But, with a collection as large as his, who can blame him.

The article is a nice story of someone who is obviously very passionate about RC vehicles. Check out the link to read more.
